Mr. Preston, again, lunged out to pull Chase’s jacket, forcing his son to look at him. “You’d have nothing without me,” he spat, his face inches from Chase’s. “You should know your place. I own you, you pathetic excuse for a man. The only reason anyone is even willing to give you the time of day is because of my name. Mine!”

Chase’s eyes narrowed, and I could feel myself getting upset too.

Did Mr. Preston think his words would get Chase to listen to him? Was he just asking for a fight, begging Chase to hit him, so that he’d have something else to hold over Chase’s head? His threatening words were disgusting. I couldn’t imagine Chase lowering himself to his father’s level, and I couldn’t stand the old man acting like he was better than Chase, like he was a real man for scarring his own son.
